Com a ascensão de Hitler, em 1933, emigrou para Paris, onde começou a trabalhar como fotógrafo independente. Os seus primeiros trabalhos como fotojornalista surgiram na Guerra Civil Espanhola (1936-1939). Nesse conflito foi registada uma das suas fotografias mais polémicas e discutidas, a imagem de um soldado no momento da morte. Em 1947 fundou a agência fotográfica Magnum, em conjunto com o polaco David Seymour, o francês Henri Cartier-Bresson eo americano Willian Vandivert. Para além da Magnum, trabalhou ainda nas revistas Picture Post, Collier's Weekly e Life.
