Martin Parr: Photobiography Lecture In Aid Of Photovoice

g
On Tuesday 13 November 2007 celebrated Magnum photographer, Martin Parr, will conclude the Magnum Photographers Lecture Series at the prestigious Royal Geographical Society in aid of charity PhotoVoice, with fascinating insights into the influences and attitudes that have shaped his provocative photographic style.

His work – focused on themes of British identity and the preposterousness of modern life - has earned him an international reputation for its oblique approach to social documentary and for its innovative imagery.

Martin will be signing copies of his books, including the newly published revised edition of Small World.

The Series comprises four illustrated lectures in association with the world renowned photographic co-operative Magnum Photos who celebrate their 60th anniversary this year.

The Lecture will be accompanied by an exhibition of images taken by newly arrived unaccompanied refugees in the UK, trained in photojournalism skills by award-winning international charity PhotoVoice. The participants, aged between 15 and 21, from Africa, Asia and the Middle East, all share one common experience: they are young refugees separated from their families, who have been given sanctuary in London and are re-building their lives here.

The stories take us behind the headlines, where refugees are so often portrayed as statistics, victims and scroungers. Through Moving Lives, young people have an opportunity to explore what it means to them to be British and to represent themselves as they want to be seen and heard: as individuals with hopes, histories, ideas and dreams.

PhotoVoice’s mission is to bring about positive social change for marginalised communities by providing them with photographic training so they can advocate, express themselves and generate income.
