The “Hands Up!” project initiated in 1999 was created during the photographer’s travels around Poland, Switzerland and Italy and has continued until today. By portraying his own life Castore depicts the lives of Europeans and reveals their identity, as seen from a historical perspective. “Being here today has to deal with this mess we are in: identity can't be divided from the complexity of individuals, traditions, cultures, contexts, history. It is not possible to free a man from his historical past. I am Italian but I can't really consider myself just an Italian: my education is made by what my mother told me was right or wrong as much as by the books I've read, the paintings I've seen, the music I've listened to, the people I've met, the places I've visited. My aim is to reflect the various tensions experienced by every European,” said Lorenzo Castore. |
