Du 28 mars au 22 juin 2008, la Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain organise la première grande exposition consacrée à l’artiste américaine Patti Smith. Poète, auteur-compositeur et chanteuse bien connue du grand public, Patti Smith développe depuis ses débuts un univers personnel où se croisent poésie, dessins, films et photographies.

Dans le cadre de cette exposition, la Fondation Cartier publie un livre de référence sur l’oeuvre photographique de l’artiste. Patti Smith y dévoile plus de deux cents photographies noir et blanc, composées majoritairement de Polaroïds. Réalisées sur une période d’une trentaine d’années, les oeuvres présentées dans cet ouvrage sont pour la plupart inédites. Poétiques et intimes, elles sont accompagnées de textes manuscrits rédigés à cette occasion par l’artiste.

From March 28 until June 22, 2008, the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain will be staging the first major exhibition devoted to American artist Patti Smith. A renowned poet, songwriter and singer with a large fan base, Patti Smith has from early on given birth to an iconic world in which poetry, sketches, films and photography mingle.

In the framework of this exhibition, the Fondation Cartier will be publishing a reference book on the photographic work of the artist. In it Patti Smith unveils over two hundred black and white photographs, including mainly polaroids. Taken over a thirty-year period, the works showcased in this book had for the most part hitherto never been published. Both poetic and intimate, they are enhanced by handwritten texts composed on this occasion by the artist.
