Born into a very poor family, at the age of 13 Mario Giacomelli began working in a printing works, an activity he continued to carry out through his life. In 1954 he began to work in photography becoming one of its major exponents and achieving international recognition. Being self-taught, he often associated his photographic works with poetry, gathering his photographs together in series. Among his best-know projects are: Non ho mani che mi accarezzino il volto, known as I Pretini, images from the seminary in Senigallia; Scanno; Presa di coscienza sulla natura and the great series of aerial landscapes, which he began already in the mid fifties. Among his most recent works are Il mare dei miei ricordi (1991-94), Io sono nessuno (1994-95) on texts by Emily Dickinson and finally Questo ricordo lo vorrei raccontare (1998-2000).
