The exhibition Abstract from Reality represents the working process of an artist who has revolutionized the idea of both natural and urban landscapes and repeatedly surprises us with new and inventive artistic creations.
With artists like Lopez Garcia and Magritte the viewer overcomes death and through that wins life. In this context photography represents momentary death and enhances the perception of the “real world” structure, whereas painting manifests life, the life that we lead and find represented within art. Franco Fontana’s often as painterly perceived photography, surpasses death, while his exposures underline life in its perfection.
In his last and not as yet completed work cycle Asfalti, Fontana explores the markings, cracks and signs found on the surfaces of the streets through his lens, details on streets that many of us daily walk and drive upon without often noticing them. Hence the formation of the virtuoso use of colour in this photographs, which remind of Lascaux’s Cave paintings, let Kandinsky and Picasso flash up and finally arrive at Helmut Newton and Lori Hersberg. Live paths cross streets, opt out, melt together, disappear and load the photographs shown at Abstract from Reality with a powerful energy.
Fontana views the world with a lively eye and an endless curiosity, in his photographs he abstracts atmospheric colours and forms out of reality, resulting in the reproduced objects remaining real. However this is only one of his special characteristics, to this day Fontana distinguishes himself through the careful work methods of a master in his trade.
