All this plus ALL TOO HUMAN

Who today would admit, aesthetically or politically, to being a humanist? And who, for that matter knows what being a humanist means? The term is so resolutely disreputable that reference books shirk a definition.

Brian Dillon asks what on earth is it? And why it is about to make a comeback?

Carsten Höller: The Devil Inside

Installing a five-storey slide in Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall, does the devilish German feel like a benevolent dictator? Carston Höller disturbs his viewers' assumptions with installations or interactive sculptures that deliberately but often playfully induce doubts and confusion.

Beijing - The City According To Art

Is it possible to comment on art or China in 2006 without resorting to the word boom?

After several intense consultations with Roget’s Brendan McGetrick found it is possible, ands so he dutifully reports the following: in 2006, the Beijing art scene is prospering! It is active and robust – if somewhat rambunctious. Find out why!

Blank Canvas - Misremembering Jim

Steve Sherrill meets James Rosenquist in his very own Lower Manhatten building to talk with the artist who is now an elder of juxtaposition – his imagery draws from the barrage of incongruities that we humans encounter every day - the historical, constant, and eternal and sometimes the well marketed.

Sherrill paints the picture in words, in the style of and in homage to the man called Jim, and let’s us draw our own narrative from the truths from Jim and his own reflective insights and opinions! It’s a foretaste of Rosenquist’s exhibition at Haunch of Venison in London.

PLUS…

Elliott Hundley is out to transform the nature of and reception of painting as we know it with his enigmatic storytelling.

Loris Greaud’s nano-sculptures: electronic microscope not provided.

Moving pictures - Anri Sala’s free floating video, Andrea Arnold’s Red Road and Ori Gersht offers up the humblest pomegranate for our scrutiny, then shoots it.

And previews of: Andrew Sunley Smith in Glasgow, Wilhelm Sasnal in London and Ryan McGinness in Milan, Amsterdam and Madrid.
