In its new space, Galerie Volker Diehl is presenting its first exhibition of works by photographer Thomas Florschuetz. In his Palastbilder (Palace Images), Thomas Florschuetz offers a series of photographs of Berlin's landmark Palast der Republik (Palace of The Republic) shortly before its ultimate and protracted demolition. Yet rather than seeking to create a photo-documentation capturing the state of a building in a fleeting moment, Thomas Florschuetz evokes its character independently of the individual motif. By conceptualising the architectonic elements, he creates a work of art that first comes into being through his images of the building. The Palastbilder also explore the link between interiors and an exterior world. In this process, Thomas Florschuetz dissolves our everyday understanding of an architectural body as severing the ordinary continuum between inside and outside. In his works, perspectives and verticality, surfaces and materials all play their part in interiors, while the view outside only appears to reference a fictitious world. Thomas Florschuetz has been living and working in Berlin since 1981. His works have won several major prizes and been exhibited in numerous national and international museums and galleries, including the MoMA in New York, the Tate Liverpool and the Tokyo Sezon Museum. |
